Action E3 Monitoring target species demographics and successional dynamics of forest ecosystems

The fence of the site in Bosco Pisano partially favored the growth rate and the general welfare of the specimens of the present population. However, the same effects, but with higher intensities were observed for other species of shrubs, arising the fear that the Z. sicula may suffer in the near future to excessive inter-specific competition (see no threat. 6).

The verification of the trends in vegetation cover is therefore an essential action for the proper
long term conservation strategy.

This verification, and periodically, will cover:

  • existing populations in sites and Contrada Bosco Pisano Ciranna
  • future populations in the 5 sites reintroduction
  • the forest area in all sites.

For Z. sicula will be monitored all plants of all sites, existing and pilot, with periodic observations, at least 3-4 times/year, relative to growth, phenology, population dynamics, plant health, response to biotic and abiotic stresses, etc..

For forest habitats species will be monitored permanent sample plots of the size of 200-400 m2, with relief of the main incremental parameters of woody vegetation, such as stem diameter, height, area of insertion of the canopy.

Furthermore, in order to evaluate the relationship between biological data and microclimatic conditions in the sites, will be performed the continuous measurement of some parameters abiotic:

  • humidity and soil
  • precipitation,
  • air temperature and soil
  • insolation.

The data acquired by the action contribute, in part, with the implementation to monitoring the impact of specific actions on the target species (Action E.2).

The action, coordinated by CNR-IGV and conducted by DRAFD too, will be launched within six months of the current sites and within 24 months of the five new sites for reintroduction.
